Winning was the last thing on his mind.
Jay B. Thomas managed to ski 12 kilometers through the backwoods of Sandy Creek on Saturday on a bandaged, sprained ankle that was swollen and black and blue.
The 34-year-old Rensselaer County man wasn't expecting to make it very far, not at the Tug Hill Tourathon Try-It 12k and 25k cross-country ski races at Winona State Park. Nearly 120 skiers from all over the Northeast had waxed their skis and hit the snow in the park, on the border of Oswego and Jefferson counties, in preparation for the real race Saturday.
