Roundup-resistant technology makes it easier to grow soybeans than we could have imagined just a few years ago. Because of its convenience, Roundup-resistant varieties dominate Midwestern soybean fields.
But my son, Brien, and I still grow conventional soybean varieties. One reason is economics: We can make more profit by selling non-GMO (genetically modified organism) soybeans. Because of the high cost of land rent, we would rather make more per acre than rent more land, although we realize it will take more time and management.
We grow high-isoflavin and high-protein soybeans on contract for buyers in Europe and Japan. Those buyers will not accept GMOs ...
