Feb. 3--The House Ethics Committee opened hearings Wednesday on ethics reform legislation that Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue has pushed for three years and has declared a "moral imperative" for the state.

The legislation would stop the so-called "revolving door" of defeated or retired legislators immediately returning to the Capitol as paid lobbyists by requiring a one-year waiting period. Other provisions would raise the maximum fine for an ethics violation from $1,000 to $10,000 and would require lobbyists to disclose what they are paid to try to influence lawmakers.
