The Civil War was a conflict between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states (the Confederacy) from 1861 to 1865. After Abraham Lincoln won the presidency in 1860, seven southern states seceded from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as president. Four more states ended up joining the Confederacy, which supported slavery and advocated greater power for state governments than for the federal government.
