ELFRIEDE JELINEK was born October 20, 1946, in Murzzuschlag, Austria. During her childhood in Vienna she took an interest in music, studying piano, organ, and the recorder. Jelinek's talent eventually led her to study music composition at the Vienna Conservatory. Before receiving her organist diploma from the conservatory in 1971, she also studied theater and art history at the University of Vienna.
Her literary debut was marked by a collection of poems, Lisas Schatten (1967). Since that time, she has published nearly thirty additional works, including plays and novels. Her works have been translated into French and English but infrequently into other languages, ...
