SMITHFIELD - For months after she moved from Norfolk to the Peninsula in 1994, Cathy Kurchinski drove past an intriguing dairy barn surrounded by roads and development.
She learned that the agricultural gem, built in 1935 after the original structure burned, had once been used as part of a working dairy by a Mennonite family named Yoder. But the building was threatened at that point by highways and a shopping center on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.
