Besides their roles as substrates in protein synthesis, amino acids also serve as precursors of certain metabolic intermediates that have important roles in growth and production. There would, therefore, seem to be considerable potential to explore the use of amino acids in animal nutrition to promote protein synthesis and protein accretion.
Most of us, whether researchers or applied nutritionists, work on the assumption that quantitative dietary requirements of animals for amino acid requirements reflect the need for amino acids as substrates for protein synthesis.
