It's fun to meet someone famous, even if that "someone" isn't a person. I had seen pictures of the red-eyed tree frog in all kinds of places--books, calendars, posters, magazines, and even on T-shirts. What a celebrity!

Then I met a friend, Joanna Sakowicz, who is an expert frog keeper. And I met some red-eyed tree frogs "in person."

Reaching into a tall cage, Ms. Sakowicz revealed a sleeping frog huddled on the underside of a leaf. These frogs are nocturnal. They're active at night, and they sleep during the day. As this one awoke, its big red eyes opened. I was face to face with one of the world's most beautiful species of frogs.
