Dans son ouvrage sur les litteratures noires des Ameriques, Caliban without Prospero, Max Dorsinville explique en 1974 que desormais la notion de "litterature nationale" doit faire place a ce qu'il appelle "minor literatures": "what 'makes the nationality of literature?' Political statehood? Language? Geographical emplacement? As fine a literary mind as Rene Wellek had to confess that, theoretically, this is a moot point" (10). Comme exemple de ces nouvelles litteratures qui ne peuvent se definir par un label national, il cite un poeme du jeune poete quebecois Paul Chamberland qui ecrit: "Quand j'irai a New York c'est vers Harlem que j'appareillerai et non par exotisme ...
