Feb. 10--OAK RIDGE -- Oak Ridge Associated Universities will play an expanded role in the government's help program for sick nuclear workers.
The not-for-profit group received a new contract valued at about $4 million annually to provide medical screenings for former workers at the Department of Energy's nuclear facilities.
ORAU already is involved in some screening programs, heading the effort to identify workers who may have chronic beryllium disease or may be vulnerable to the incurable respiratory illness.
The new effort announced Wednesday boosts the number of facilities available for medical screening.
