The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is home to two Eurasian lynx, Taymyr and Nesha, who enjoy the cold winter months in Central New York. Eurasian lynx reside in the cold climates of Siberia, Northern Eurasia and the Himalayas.
Eurasian lynx have features that prepare them for living in the snowy weather. They have long legs and large feet that are coated with fur. This creates a snowshoe effect, allowing the lynx to walk on the snow.
Lynx have gray or yellowish-brown coats with visible spots or stripes that are darker during the summer.
