A 1,320-nm laser system, CoolTouch CTEV, gained FDA approval for the treatment of reflux of the greater saphenous vein (GSV) associated with varicose veins and varicosities. The laser system is distributed by CoolTouch, Inc., in the United States and by GlobalMed Technologies in Europe and Asia.
According to a company news release, the 1,320-nm laser system is safe and effective, with a long-term success rate of 98%. Results of a 24-patient study showed the 1,320-nm wavelength to be safer for use than shorter endovenous wavelengths because it avoids interaction with red blood cells that can result in vein wall perforation and bruising.
