Article: USTR threatens tariff on Chinese ceramicware. (United States Trade Representative)

On Aug. 27, 1992, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced a proposed determination that, in its opinion, China has erected unreasonable and discriminatory barriers to market access that impose a burden on U.S. exports to China.

The proposed action is to impose sanctions, in the form of high tariffs, on Chinese goods coming into the United States, unless China removes its restrictions on American goods. Many U.S.-based businesses have complained for some time that China has a variety of barriers to entry of American-made goods, such as import permits and special licenses, that significantly inhibit sales of a number of American-made products in China.
