Feb. 11--General Motors Corp.'s Oklahoma City factory will save up to $1 million a year in energy costs by tapping into gas from a nearby city landfill, the company said Thursday.
The local plant is GM's seventh facility to use landfill gas, a methane and carbon dioxide mix released by decomposing garbage.
GM has converted a natural gas boiler in its powerhouse to use landfill gas piped from the city's Southeast Landfill, about four miles away along Interstate 240.
The effort is part of GM's nationwide goal to reduce its energy consumption by 25 percent from 1995 levels, plant manager Tyree Minner said.
