In the latest setback for the only public hospital serving south Los Angeles, troubled Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center was stripped of its accreditation last week after repeated lapses in patient care.
The revocation of approval by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations threatens King/Drew's ability to train doctors and care for emergency psychiatric and low-income patients. It also means private insurers could refuse to pay for care there, cutting off the hospital's highest-margin source of revenue.
