Feb. 9--OCALA -- The state said Tuesday that it will look for a backup child-welfare agency in case the embattled Kids Central goes out of business.

"Our preference is to keep Kids Central," said Don Thomas, state Department of Children & Families administrator in District 13, which covers Lake, Marion, Sumter, Citrus and Hernando counties. "But if they are not able to comply [with requests for improvement] or if they decide to fold, we want to see whether one or more groups are interested," he said Tuesday of the private group made up of several child-welfare agencies.
