The Roman predecessor of Valentines Day was the celebration of the Lupercalia. The feast recalled how Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were rescued and nursed by a female wolf. The Lupercalia celebration included the custom of having young Roman men draw lots to determine which of the citys maidens would be their social partners for the next year. If some of the couples fell in love and married, it was attributed to Cupid and Venus. When Christianity became the official religion of Rome, the feast of the Lupercalia was outlawed by the Pope and it was replaced by the Feast of St. Valentine.
