FORT CAMPBELL -- Spec. Jason Burgstalle stood on the cold steps of a tall administrative building, holding an M16 machine gun.
Men and women in traditional Muslim garb huddled in a nearby restaurant, peering out at troops who had just made a sweep of several buildings. The smell of camel dung hung in the air.
"The hard part is not knowing when or where the enemy might be," said Burgstalle, tensing up while a taxi driver maneuvered around a bullet-ridden car on the curb. The driver stopped briefly to yell something in Arabic to troops on a nearby rooftop. Then he drove off.
