Brussels -- In October 2004, Rocco Buttiglione, a practising Catholic, an intellectual and politician, friend and confidant of the Pope, was nominated by the Italian government to the position of European Union (EU) Justice Minister. During his confirmation hearings before the European Parliament, he was questioned regarding his attitude to homosexuality. Responding with the orthodox Catholic position that homosexual activity is sinful, Buttiglione nevertheless affirmed that his belief would not affect his political actions and that, on his watch, homosexuals would not suffer civil discrimination.
