WHEN Jerry John Rawlings grabbed power (for a second time) in 1981, ostensibly to save them from a corrupt civilian government, Ghanaians wondered whether they were witnessing the return of a saviour or the start of a scourge. Some are still unsure. That did not prevent them electing Mr Rawlings as their president in the election on November 3rd, with 58% of the vote.
The triumph of Mr Rawlings's party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has broken the mould of Ghana's politics.
