THE Kyoto Protocol on climate change came into force today - seven years after being agreed.
It aims to slow global warming with pledges to cut emissions of greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2 per cent by 2012.
But the US and Australia have opted out of the treaty for economic reasons, while developing countries including China and India are outside the framework of Kyoto.
Environmental groups protested eight years ago that the target was far too modest and the rich industrialised nations should do more.
