Splint market baskets were designed to be strong and light for the purpose of storing, carrying, and gathering foods from the garden and market. The name originates from the thin strips of wood that were used to weave these baskets. This circa 1900 New England example (16 1/2"H X 7"W X 16"L) has a notched stationary wooden handle, a narrow, deep opening, and a plain checkerboard-pattern design. The basket is particularly distinguished by its rectangular shape and squared handle.
