Article: NEUTRINO ICE FISHING UW RESEARCHERS ARE DRILLING 1.5 MILES INTO ANTARCTIC ICE TO TRACK ENIGMATIC PARTICLES.(LOCAL/WISCONSIN)

Byline: Ron Seely Wisconsin State Journal

When explorer Robert Scott reached the South Pole in 1912, he looked around and said, "Great God! This is an awful place!"

Despite that grim assessment, UW-Madison researchers are thriving at the South Pole. In fact, they are just returning from spending an Antarctic summer - from late October to mid-February - working on the earliest stages of what will be the world's largest science project.

It's called IceCube, and when it is done, researchers from UW-Madison and elsewhere will use it to study everything from the invisible hearts of black holes to the mysteries of the burning sun.
