When explorer Robert Scott reached the South Pole in 1912, he looked around and said, "Great God! This is an awful place!"
Despite that grim assessment, UW-Madison researchers are thriving at the South Pole. In fact, they are just returning from spending an Antarctic summer - from late October to mid-February - working on the earliest stages of what will be the world's largest science project.
It's called IceCube, and when it is done, researchers from UW-Madison and elsewhere will use it to study everything from the invisible hearts of black holes to the mysteries of the burning sun.
