Article: Anticonvulsant studied for primary insomnia.(Clinical Rounds)

NEW YORK -- The anticonvulsant tiagabine is effective in maintaining and enhancing deep sleep in adults with primary insomnia, Thomas Roth, Ph.D., reported during a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association.

The first randomized study of tiagabine (Gabitril) in patients with primary insomnia found tiagabine 8 mg and 12 mg doses significantly maintained and enhanced "deeper" nonrapid eye movement stages of sleep, and did not cause next-day residual sedation at 4 mg and 8 mg.
