What else could you call a beautiful powerful flyer that can soar and dive like an eagle, strike like a snake, has feet like a duck, and can dive and swim like a fish? Its relatives in Africa, Australia, and India are known as "darters." In North and South America, they are called anhinga (of the family Angingidae). They are also known as "snakebird" and "water turkey." They range from Southern Oklahoma and Eastern Texas east to Eastern North Carolina and south to Argentina. Kendra Willett, biologist at "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge oil Sanibel Island, FL, said that the anhingas in the refuge do not colonize.
