CANBERRA, Feb 18 Asia Pulse - Rises in private health insurance premiums are inevitable as the age of new members grows substantially older, a conservative think-tank says.

More than 90,000 people aged over 55 took out private health insurance in 2004, figures showed this week.

At the same time, more than 66,000 people aged under 55 abandoned private health insurance.

The trend was likely to push up the price of premiums as insurers were forced to pay out more claims to high-cost older members, The Australia Institute said.
