Feb. 18--If you've gotten a great deal on an airfare recently, one of the most important people you have to thank is Alfred Kahn.
He doesn't work in the industry, but he is considered the father of airline deregulation.
It was his successful crusade as chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board in 1978 to deregulate airlines that spurred creation of the modern industry -- its triumphs and its troubles.
Now 87, Kahn continues to observe the evolution of airlines. The troubles in the industry have prompted inquisitive challenges to Kahn and to the wisdom of his decision.
