Researchers with UW-Madison and a private stem-cell research center have removed at least one of the potential stumbling blocks that stand in the way of testing human therapies promised by human embryonic stem cells.
Ren-He Xu, a senior scientist at WiCell, a private, nonprofit research institute that studies stem cells, has found a way to grow the finicky embryonic stem cells without using mouse-derived cells. It's an important step because those animal cells are thought to be a source of contamination that could forestall clinical trials.
