BAGHDAD, Iraq _ Eight suicide bombings killed at least 50 people Saturday as Iraq's Shiites, newly empowered by their victory in the recent election, defied the threat of insurgent violence and turned out in their hundreds of thousands to mark the Shiite holy day of Ashoura.
One bomber rode a bicycle, another boarded a bus and at least four others walked into their targets in an onslaught against Shiites in Baghdad by Iraq's Sunni-dominated insurgency, bringing to more than 80 the number of dead in two days of attacks timed to coincide with the commemorations. A U.S. soldier was among those killed.
