Article: African-American women opening more businesses.

Byline: Mark Watson

Feb. 20--Rose Slaughter loves what she does.

A registered nurse, Slaughter works in medical esthetics, offering electrolysis, permanent makeup, mesotherapy (a nonsurgical fat-removal system) and laser skin care.

"It allows me to help my clients create a sense of confidence," she said.

Slaughter struck out on her own in 1989, opening Preferred Electrology East.

She said she's Memphis's sole African-American electrologist.
