CHICAGO _ It used to be that you'd show up for work every day and know, without being told, what the mission was: To act busy.
But that's not good enough anymore. Every business, club or church has to have a "mission statement,'' a declaration of profound purpose and intent. Mission statements are among the great scourges of our time. They are filled with such high ideals that by the time you're done reading one, you're certain you've just learned about a maharishi's spirituality and wellness center and not about a company that makes, say, deadbolts.
