What distinguishes polypropylene (PP) from the other major thermoplastics is growth. PP is the youngest bulk polymer, having been developed by Montedison (Milan) in the 1950s, and has proved to be the most versatile, with applications varying from packaging films to carpet fibers, from water pipes to automobile bumpers. Even in today's recession-hit global economy, the double-digit growth enjoyed by PP producers in the late' 80s has slowed to relatively healthy levels of about 6%-7%/year in Europe and 7%-8%/year in the U.S., and growth is expected to significantly outperform GDP for the foreseeable future.
