Jerrold Hirsch's Portrait of America is the best book yet published on the much-studied Federal Writers' Project (FWP). Previous scholarly works have dealt mostly with the organizational and administrative history of the FWP, while Jerre Mangione's The Dream and the Deal (Boston, 1972) is a useful memoir by the one-time national coordinating editor of the project.
