Feb. 20--GROTON -- The USS Jimmy Carter officially joined the Navy's submarine fleet Saturday as the former president, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the only president to serve on a submarine, watched its crew charge across two gangplanks to man the sophisticated attack vessel.
Built by Electric Boat, the $3.2 billion Jimmy Carter is the third and final of the Seawolf class of submarines, a stealthy, heavily armed group of ships originally designed to confront Soviet submarines. The ship's massive black hull glowed in the sun Saturday as a red and white pennant flapped on its bow, signifying its entry into service.
