CADMIUM ACCUMULATES in the human body during life and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of renal tubular dysfunction.[1] In industrialized countries, release of cadmium into the environment has increased considerably during the second half of this century. A large-scale epidemiologic study (Cadmibel), which was carried out in Belgium from 1985 to 1989, assessed whether environmental cadmium pollution led to an increased uptake of cadmium by the human body and to increased health effects.
