For the average person, the idea of suicide is baffling. We might be able to understand it when someone is dying from a painful illness, but otherwise, it's incomprehensible.
Even talking about suicide makes us feel anxious and awkward, so we stay quiet.
It's important to talk about it anyway. According to the Centers for Disease Control, suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. It's increasing among those younger than 19 and those older than 65. It's a serious public health issue.
