Ask any large-scale dairy manager about the challenges that come with the territory, and labor relations or employee management is sure to rank at or very near the top of the list. When a large share of the work force is made up of family members who also own stock in the business, the challenge can enter a whole new dimension.
Just ask the Larson brothers--Ed and Mike--of Larson Acres in Evansville, Wis. Of 30 employee slots at this 1,400-cow dairy, 12 are filled by family members. "It has turned out well for us," says Ed. "But we have had to work at it."
