When the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. releases its annual summary of bank deposits every fall, bankers, analysts, and others try to determine the winners and losers in the deposit-gathering game.
But the FDIC figures are widely viewed as a poor barometer of the street-corner battles among retail banks, because commercial and consumer deposits and mortgage escrow are lumped together.
