A study published in the British Medical Journal (February 11 issue) found that a proprietary St John's wort extract was just as effective in relieving depression as a prescription antidepressant drug.
In the randomized double-blind study, patients who took 900mg per day of herb extract WS 5570, produced by the Dr Willmar Schwabe Group, a Germany-based plant-research pharmaceutical company, saw the same benefits as those taking GlaxoSmithKline's antidepressant Paxil (paroxetine).
