The European Commission (EC) almost bit the bullet Dec. 8 on the issue of saving what some scientists regard to be an endangered North Sea cod fishery--but spat it back out Dec. 22 in face of protests from the British fishing industry.

The EU abandoned demands for the closure of key British cod fisheries, in favor of a compromise that would do little more than require crews to use nets with a larger mesh size to allow more juvenile fish to escape capture.
