Feb. 26--As a University at Buffalo student in the late 1940s, Robert Gundlach changed his major from chemistry to physics, even though he believed it wouldn't lead to a very lucrative career.
He was wrong about that. But as he grew into an inventor, he discovered many of his breakthroughs occurred when things didn't go as he had planned.
So it was with Gundlach's physics education. It started him on a 42-year career with the company that evolved into Xerox Corp. in Rochester. He earned 155 U.S. patents with the company, and in May he will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.
