NEW YORK -- No one doubts that The Gap is one of retailing;s great success stories. But in recent months, the 1,322-store chain seems to have stumbled with an earnings slowdown and a less-measurable, but perhaps more important, erosion in its cachet.
Some say the store that turned the fashion industry on its ear is scrambling to regain its momentum, in the face of formidable competition from a broad array of designers and retailers, who have copied the chain's once envied formula.
