CHARLES Kennedy promised help for first-time buyers yesterday by proposing to abolish stamp duty on houses worth less than [pounds sterling]150,000.

This would exempt almost half a million homebuyers from the duty every year, claimed the Liberal Democrat leader.

However, his party's economic manifesto for the election would also see the middle classes punished with a range of tax hikes.

The LibDems want to introduce a top income tax rate of 50p on those earning more than [pounds sterling]100,000, which Mr Kennedy said would raise [pounds sterling]30.8billion a year to pay for an array of policies.
