When historians look back at developments in the transplant field in 2004, they will find one phrase associated with many of the most significant news developments - show me the money!
It began in January when a Wisconsin law went into effect allowing live organ donors to deduct up to $10,000 in expenses from their state income tax. In February, an international organ trafficking ring was exposed which involved poor Brazilians being paid to go to South Africa to give a kidney to mostly Israeli patients being subsidized by the Israeli government for the cost of the organ and expenses.
