Talk of the breakup of the Health Insurance Association of America due to a split between large and small companies is "highly exaggerated," to paraphrase Mark Twain's famous quote about reports of his death.
"That kind of talk was going on when I came here five years ago and it's going on today," said Carl Schramm, who is leaving his post as HIAA president by the end of the year to become executive vice president of Fortis, Inc.
The current rumor has it that HIAA may be quit by small companies which strongly support medical underwriting and oppose the guaranteed issue of health insurance policies in HIAA's small group reform proposal.
