IT IS not likely that Bill Vancil will ever forget 2004. How often does a year that starts off with a cancer diagnosis become perhaps the best year of your life?

Vancil, 63, is well known around Madison as a longtime executive with Midwest Family Radio Stations (Magic 98, Q-106 and others) who semi-retired in 2002 to consult and design Web sites.

He was actually busier than ever in January 2004, when a doctor's visit for chest pains eventually led to a series of tests, which in turn led to Vancil being told he had an advanced case of prostate cancer.
