Geoscience Australia has begun a study of tsunami patterns and prospects in northern Australia and impacts on the city of Darwin. Seismologist Spiro Spiliopoulos says the substantial earthquake which hit Darwin on 2 March 2005 was centred 660km north in the Banda Sea, but probably too deep to cause a tsunami. He says the earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, was caused by the Australian and Eurasian continental plates colliding.
