Article: Zirconia-nickel oxide for fuel cell electrodes.(Fuel Cells)

A composite for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes that can more than double an SOFC's electricity generating performance has been developed by researchers at the Hosokawa Powder Technology Research Institute, Japan.

SOFCs made with the material can generate 0.8W.[cm.sup.-2] compared with the standard 0.3W.[cm.sup.-2], the developers say.

The composite is made from a uniformly distributed mixture of powders metals--among which is nickel oxide--and zirconia. Spacing between the individual granules improves the flow of the oxygen ions needed for power generation, boosting the performance of the fuel cell.
