The Senate is considering amendments to the Radio and Television Law that include limiting broadcast ownership to 35 percent of the market, a proposal that would dislodge the existing television duopoly in Mexico.
Two companies--Televisa and TV Azteca--control 95 percent of TV stations and the legislation's sponsors want to reduce the power of the nation's TV barons and generate more competition.

Sen. Javier Corral (PAN-Chihuahua) has been leading the campaign for new TV regulations for several years. He told the Financial Times that television "has become a power itself, rather than a counterweight to power."
