Mar. 7--It may all have been one big flirt.
But when Dell Inc. chief executive Kevin Rollins paid Advanced Micro Devices Inc. a compliment in November, saying its processor chip technology had progressed remarkably, the computer industry's pundits and wags turned into a bunch of gossipy hens.
If Dell, which bought processor chips only from Intel Corp., took up with AMD, it would have dramatic implications for the computer industry, they said. The holy alliance between Dell and Intel would be broken.
Then, just as suddenly, Mr. Rollins silenced the rumors. Intel was addressing concerns about its own technology ...
